Thank you for this, Dr. Donnelly.

Question for you about insect repellent, if I may: Many years ago, our (very knowledgeable, trusted) pediatrician said the best repellent is DEET. His comment was that if you're not using DEET, you might as well not use any at all.

I know DEET is proven safe and effective. The harm from insect-borne illness is far worse than anything in DEET (I am concerned about mosquitoes, but my bigger concern usually is ticks).

But I am curious about whether some of the other options now (like permethrin, for example) are equally effective and safe. I have no objection to DEET, but my kids (teenagers) push back on the Off spray because of the smell, greasiness, they don't like the feel, etc. etc. etc. (again, teenagers 🤦🏼‍♀️).

Are there others that you suggest that would be just as effective, but perhaps less offensive to teenagers (who are, admittedly, offended by basically everything)? I just want them to use whatever repellent they want, as long as they are willing to wear it and not be eaten alive all summer.
